Everything About KETA
All About K-ETA explains everything you need to know about planning a trip to South Korea. If you’re traveling for tourism, visiting family, or attending events, you’ll likely need a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (KETA). Let’s break down what it is, who needs it, and how to make sure you’re all set for your journey!
What Exactly Is KETA?
The KETA is an online travel authorization system that allows foreign nationals to enter South Korea for various reasons, such as leisure, family visits, and attending events (excluding purposes that involve making a profit). It’s a convenient way to get entry permission without going through a full visa process.
Do You Need to Apply for KETA?
Travelers from 67 visa-exempt countries and 45 visa-free entry countries need to apply for a KETA if they plan to visit or even just transit through South Korea. So, if you’re coming from one of these countries, make sure to get your K-ETA before you travel.
How Long Does KETA Last?
Once approved, your KETA is good for up to two years, as long as there are no changes to essential personal details like your name, nationality, or passport number. If any of this information changes, you’ll need to reapply for a new KETA.
Double-Check Before You Submit Your KETA!
Keep in mind, you can’t edit your application once you’ve submitted it. If you make a mistake, you’ll need to apply all over again, so be sure to double-check all your details before making the final payment. If the information on your K-ETA doesn’t match your passport, you won’t be able to board your flight or ship to Korea—so better safe than sorry!
Who Doesn’t Need KETA?
There are a few groups who are exempt from needing a K-ETA:
- Holders of diplomatic or official passports
- Travelers who already have a valid Korean visa or are registered foreigners in Korea
- Dual citizens with a valid Korean passport
- U.S. military personnel on official duty in Korea
- Crew members (including those joining a crew)
- ABTC cardholders (except for those from the United States and Canada)
- UN Passport Holders (UNLP, LAISSEZ-PASSER)
- Transit passengers (note: you’ll still need an approved K-ETA if you plan to enter Korea during your transit)
Get Ready for Your Korean Adventure
Before you set off on your adventure, take a few moments to make sure your KETA application is correctly filled out. This small step will help you avoid any unnecessary delays or hiccups during your journey. Safe travels, and enjoy your time in South Korea!
